2008 Fall Bear Hunt Starts - August 15, 2008
Hello From the North Country;
Thank you for your support and interest in my bear Hunting Program. The pleasant fall surroundings are replaced by cold Arctic air and blizzards, Habitants, human and animal alike have heeded the signals and have prepared for winter. This allows us an opportunity to reflect upon the past year and plan for the upcoming Bear Season.
The 2007 Bear Hunt was awesome. The individual hunter success rate was 93% with many trophies in the 300 - 400 pound category. The largest bear weighed 525 lb. taken by archer Tad Ralston from Battlecreek MI.
The hunter success rate is based on individual hunter success and does not include sightings.
Wawa has a problem - too many bears.

The Season for the 2008 bear hunt opens on Friday, August 15th. I will be taking hunters until September 15th. The August 15th opening is very important as it allows us to "duck" under the berry crop, in particular the Mountain Ash and hazelnuts. These berries become a source of food for the bear early in September.
As with any big game hunt, weather is an important factor to the overall success. The blackflies are usually finished by Sept 1st. I am looking forward to another successful hunt this fall.
RATES FOR THE 2008 Bear Hunt
(U.S. FUNDS)
Regular Bear Hunt......................................................................$1100.00
Pukaskwa & White Lake Hunts..................................................$1200.00
Payment & Reservation Policy
A $300.00 deposit is require to reserve a bear hunt. Personal cheques are accepted for deposits. Final payment must be made in the form of a certified cheque, money order or cash to Rick Dickson's Ontario Black Bear Hunts. A 5% Federal Tax will apply to all hunts. License is extra.
Regular Bear Hunt
The hunter arrives with his tent or camper and camps at one of our remote campsites. Most of the hunters "roughing it" are within minutes of their baits and it eliminates the longer drive to and from your bait set-ups.
There are excellent housekeeping cabins also available within my baiting area. The hunter brings only his personal belongings and food. The approximate cost per cabin for 4 people is $400.00/week. I will arrange to rent a cabin for you upon your request.
The "WHITE LAKE OUTPOST" hunt is strictly a water hunt, with the only mode of transportation to the camp and the baits being by boat and motor. The White Lake Outpost is a 2 bedroom, 28' x 26' log cabin situated on a sand beach, 5 miles from the boat launching area. Fully furnished and equipped with propane stove, fridge, freezer and lights, this cabin provides an excellent base for a unique bear hunting, and fishing experience. The camp will accommodated 6 persons.
Numerous baits are strategically located along the 115 miles of shoreline of White Lake. The water of White Lake is noted throughout the north as premiere walleye and northern pike fisheries.
You will be required to bring your personal belongings and supply your own boat, motor and gas. White Lake is a large body of water covering an area of 14,000 acres, so your boat should be at least a deep 14' boat. The first hunt will begin on Saturday, August 19th and will run from Saturday to Saturday.
The "PUKASKWA
OUTPOST CAMP"
is an 18'
x 22' log cabin, equipped with propane lights, fridge & stove. The
camp will comfortably accommodate four (4 - minimum) persons. As
the "Pukaskwa Outpost Camp" is located in very rugged country, you
will require a four wheel drive vehicle & all terrain vehicles.

UPON ARRIVAL
You will be met in Wawa by Rick or one of his guides & brought to your cabin or remote campsite. A trip planning review will be conducted. Rick or one of his guides will then show you your baits.
THE BAITS
Each hunter is guaranteed working baits. We provide extra baits/party. The bait consists of butcher scraps, bakery goods and grease. The butcher scraps are placed in a large metal drum securely anchored to the ground. The only animal in the woods capable of "tipping" the drum is a bear. Approximately 2/3 of the baits also have "cookie boxes". The cookie box is a 1' x 2' metal fabricated container (1/8" steel plate) with a capacity for 15 gal. of cookies. The "cookie box" is securely fastened to a tree. The container is weather and rodent proof. When the bear is finished eating, the lid will automatically close. I am the only outfitter to use this innovative baiting technique.
TREE STANDS
80% of my baits have large permanent tree stands. I do recommend that each hunter bring a portable. It is mandatory for all clients hunting from tree stands to provide & wear a safety harness.
WHAT TO BRING
* Normal fall deer hunting clothing & equipment
* Tree stands, folding stool, hatchet or folding saw, sterno or single burner stove for grease burn, trail timers, rope, rubber gloves, compass, rain gear, rubber boots, head nets & duck tape, etc.
* hunter orange requirement (hat & vest)
