About Mo & John

John was born and raised in the Toronto area, and I was born and raised in Sault Ste Marie, Ontario.

We met in 1981, at the Convention Inn Hotel, (now the Delta Edmonton South) in Edmonton, Alberta.

Top of the Inn is under the letters

I worked in the Diningroom, The Top of the Inn, for 20 years.  John was there for 16 years, eventually becoming the Executive Chef of the Hotel.

Now I'm the Maid, and he is the "Executive Bedmaker". We've come a long way!  Hah!.

We've enjoyed our 70 years in the Hospitality Industry.  (combined years - we aren't that old) I was honored with the American Express Award & Alberta Gold Key Award for "Excellence in Hospitality" Whoooooo!

The Alberta Hotel Association, awarded John, a Gold and a Bronze medal in the Menu Awards Competitions too.

John was a great Chef but did not fit the Stereotype.  He didn't throw temper tantrums and hated to be on TV.  Go figure!

Edmonton 1984  We enjoyed the Oiler's Dynasty in the 80's!  Look - I even got a Gretzky doll for Christmas...

Vegas - 1985  We would drive from Edmonton to Vegas in 24 hours, Gamble for the weekend and drive back! Ahhh, to be young and foolish again!

Speaking of foolish........

I love this pic - Too funny.  We were in the money!

Our biggest gamble ever was buying this place in October 30, 1999.  We didn't know anything about running a Motel.  Things were not running smoothly,  we had broken pipes and no customers, (It was November - there are NO customers) and poor John would lie in bed thinking.....  "I think we made a big mistake."

Here we are in front of the old sign, 2000

B&B burn out rate for couples is 5 years, but we are almost finished our 11th year and we are kicking butt and loving it more than ever!

"Throw yourself into some work you believe in with all your heart, live for it, die for it, and you will find happiness that you had thought could never be yours." Dale Carnegie (1888-1955)

Yes it's true....  Mom & Pop Motels are becoming extinct.  Since we purchased this place, 14 Motels have closed from Wawa to Sault Ste Marie, and 5 towns north of us have all lost their only Hotels.  Our guests are happy that we aren't smart enough to Bail like the rest of them. Haha

This year, we won an Amazing Hotel Award!
Wow!  We were Voted as a "Top 10 Best Value Hotel in Canada"

And this year I tried my hand at painting billboards ~

It's a fun thing to do in Off-Season, but I'd never want to do it for a living.  eeeeeeek
